University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India
Overview
A University Grants Commission (UGC) national scholarship for pursuing a postgraduate degree within India. Ten thousand scholarships are awarded each year (or as decided by the Commission).
It pays Rs 15,000 a month for 10 months a year, for up to two years. 30% of slots are reserved for women — filled first by 'Single/twin/fraternal Girl Child' candidates without considering UG marks; the rest are filled on all-India merit.
Students in the first year of their first PG degree, admitted in regular/full-time mode and below 30 years of age on the date of admission, can apply. The institution must be NAAC-accredited (UGC 2(f) or deemed university), government-funded and empowered to award degrees, or an Institution of National Importance. For 2026-27, applications on the National Scholarship Portal are open from 16 September to 30 November 2026.
