Beti Bachao Beti Padhao — programme for the protection and education of girls
Government of India (Ministry of Women and Child Development; partners: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Education)
Overview
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) is a flagship Government of India programme to address the declining child sex ratio, promote the survival and protection of the girl child, and encourage girls' education and empowerment. It focuses on awareness, behaviour change, prevention of gender-biased sex selection, and better enrolment and retention of girls in school.
It is mainly an awareness, advocacy and convergence programme: the core scheme gives no direct cash assistance to individuals, and there is generally no individual application. Campaigns, camps and local action plans run through districts, local bodies, schools, health facilities and anganwadi centres, which also link girls to schemes for education, health, nutrition, safety and financial inclusion.
If a girl needs support for education, health or safety, her family can approach the school or District Education Office, the anganwadi centre, an ASHA worker or a health facility. For child marriage, abuse or trafficking, contact Childline 1098, the District Child Protection Unit or the police. For savings in a girl's name, a Sukanya Samriddhi account can be opened at a post office or authorised bank.
